I was 15 when I had the surgery, but the doctors tried EVERYTHING.. I mean everything, I was on crutches for 2 months, I had a walking cast for 6 weeks, I had orthotics, a special braces the kept pressure on the sesamoid, I had cortisone shots between my toes in the sesmoid area….PAINFUL!!!…after 2 years they decided to remove the bone..and after a while.. I am fine now!! almost… I can’t really wear high heels for very long and finding shoes that don’t press on the scar is hard. I wouldn’t recommend the surgery unless you’ve exhausted all other options and unless it is broken. They showed me my bone after surgery and it looked like a M&M with a lighting bolt through it (lighting bolt= fracture)…Hold off because it was painful!

I would hold off on recommending surgery on a 14 year old. There are conservative things to try such as padding, orthotics, anti-inflammatory medicines, even immobiliztion in a cast or cast brace. I recommend you get another opinion.
