Severe pain behind knee

(3 discussions)

hello… I am hoping someone may have an idea about what is wrong with my knee.

I am having severe pain behind my knee and stiffness/ tightness in my leg following standing or sitting (chair position) for more then 30 minutes or so. I saw a chiropractor all last week. He then told me that he could be of no help. He thought I should see a orthopedic surgeon. He believed that it could be a “Baker’s Cyst”. I do have some swelling behind my knee, but nothing of golfball size. This has been going on for about 6 months with no relief. When this first began hurting I could solve the pain some by stretching my leg out and/ or applying Bengay. I now am having LOTS of pain with no relief. The only thing I can do is take 4 to 5 Ibuprofen (during the day) and Tylenol PM (to sleep) to help some. I do now have an appointment for May 7th with an Orthopedic surgeon, but I was wanting some info on this ASAP. The problem is if this is something that I can solve at home then I would love to know. I do not have health insurance and this is going to be very expensive!!!!

Thank you for any info you will provide.
Ciao…

I have essentialy sam sympyoms as you. I am retired and my physical activities are: golf, walking, yard work and computer sitting. About 8 weeks ado, I developed severe pain in back of the right knee. My general practioner gave me anti inflamatory and pain pills. This with rest and moist heat reduced the level and frequency of the pain. I havr a vein problem in my left leg and was referred to a vein specialist who prescribed support hose for the righy . I now experience pain after about 2o minutes driving or one hour sitting at the computer. I have no pain when walking or gofing I am not sure the support hose do any good and am looking for a cause and cure for the condition.

It seems strange that you would be having all of this trouble, but can’t recall any injury. I think you’re correct in your assumption that it has to do something with being on your feet all the time on a concrete floor. My sister experienced symptoms similar to your’s after she feel on a slippery grocery store floor and injured her knee. She experienced swelling, pain, and burising behind her knee was told that she had burst one of the bursa sacks behind her knee.

Although I can’t really tell you anything as far as the problem itself, I can offer you some advice on treating your symptoms until you see your othepedic surgeon. Try, if possible, to stay off your feet as much as possible. Even it this means pulling up a chair while working instead of standing. Also, I would recommend icing for 15-20 minutes at least three times a day. This will work better than Bengay because icing causes the blood vessels to constrict and limits swelling. By slowing down nerve inpulses, icing also eases pain. You may also find that elevating your legs while you sleep will eliminate some of the swelling.

I hope that this answers your question! Keep me posted…

I also wanted to add that I do not remember injuring my knee. I am not real athletic so I do not run or stress the knee alot. However, I am on my feet alot on concrete floors. I am a florist and I spend alot of time standing.
    Thanks again…
