Sharp hip pain–bursitis?
Over the past several months I’ve had occasional bursts of sharp pains about halfway between my hip and the top of my pelvis, on both sides. It comes on suddenly while walking and almost feels like a cramp, and usually goes away after a couple minutes. One day on a recent backpacking trip it became very painful on my left side–with every step it felt like I was getting a shot. That night I could hardly hobble around camp. The next day I raised my pack so that my waist strap rested on the top of my pelvic bones and hiked 14 miles with hardly any pain (in my hip, at least!) Does this sound like hip bursitis?
My shoes are all worn off considerably more on the outer side of the heels, and five or six months ago I began changing my posture so that I walk more evenly on my heel, thinking that I was standing/walking incorrectly. Am I overcompensating? Or is it normal for shoes to get worn down unevenly like that? If it is bursitis, it’s probably caused by overcompensating–over pronating, right?
Any suggestions for treating the injury and preventing its recurrence? How long should I wait before backpacking again?

the ache could be comming from your sacroiliac joint, some muscles attach to both the sacroiliac and the hip. other possibilities would be your tfl muscle if the pain is right at the side of your hip, hard to say without seeing you though.

a hip bursitis would be really irritated with a back pack rubbing against it, and if you have alot of over pronation, that is a definite possibility, orthotics are the way to go for that, not much else that will work. i used to live in pdx. go see a friend of mine Dr. Kiran Kaul. hes a chiropractor, one of the best ive met. he also makes (or did last year) the same orthotics as me, so if you decide to go that route he can get the top notch ones! i can try to find his work## if your interested and cant find him (think he is right beside the laurethurst theatre). wow hows that for reminiscing! let me know what you decide.
