Shin pain

(5 discussions)

Hi all,

I need help diagnosing my shin pain. I stopped running 8 days ago due to pain in my lower left shin. It doesn’t hurt anymore when I walk or climb stairs.

It does hurt sharply, however, when I jump on it or try to jog. The pain is only triggered when there is impact on the ball of my foot under my toes. I can bounce on the foot or move quickly from place to place if I just use my heel. It never hurts by touching the leg or putting pressure on it. It is only the impact to the pad beneath my toes that elicits the pain.

I really need help. It is very important that I get back to running ASAP. Is this a stress fracture? Stress reaction? Tendonitis?

Thanks.

when i first came back from my shin splints i was told to stay at one level for a week before changing. basically 15-20 min. one week, 20-25 the next, and so on. the days off are good in the beginning so that you know where you stand, but eventually move up to training every day. for example, one week don’t change the duration of your run, change how often you run. i know this sucks, but it may help prevent further injury or any complications that may have you off your feet longer than you would like to be. i know it sounds like a long recovery, but by following this type of a recovery, you are less likely to have recurring shin splints or even stress fractures or any other problems associated with this. good luck!

I was hoping to start tomorrow, which will be my 4th day with no pain whatsoever.

Should I start by alternating my running days. As in, run 20 min, day off, run 30 min, day off, modified speedwork, run 40 min, regular speedwork, 40 min, 25 min, race day?

Is that too much too soon or is that a good plan?

I’m sorry about your injury and I hope and will pray that you get well soon. Thank you for all your help.

i wouldn’t be so quick to jump off the couch, at least not yet. i know how frustrating it can be not being allowed to do anything. i went from being a three season athlete to not running in over a year. i was just like you, as soon as i felt better i wanted to jump up and start running, but did me in. take it easy. and if you are going to start training again, start slow. if you think you are going too slow, you are probably going at the right speed. my trainer had me start on a treadmill or a track (something softer than concrete) and only run for a fraction of what i used to. i hope this helps. and just remember, take it easy!

It felt like the pain was directly on the bone a bit above the ankle.

It hurt really badly one day, and disappeared yesterday morning and has yet to return. Does this mean I am good to go? Nothing I do elicits the pain. This is my 10th day resting from running.

where in your shin? inside, outside? right above the ankle or a few cm above? is the pain around the bone or around the muscle? depending on these answers, depends on what it could be.
