Shin splint surgery?

(4 discussions)

i’ve had shin splints for a year and its gotten to the point where i am in so much pain its not even funny. i went to see my doctor and they did an mri and the edema and periostitis was really bad. my doctor started to talk about surgery because we both feel that i have exhausted all my other options (physical therapy didn’t work, neither has medicine, massages, nothing). well as soon as he said surgery i was shocked because i didn’t see that one coming. he didn’t go into details or even tell me what it involves, he wants to completely rule out a stress fracture first. but i really want to know. what kind of surgery do they do? what is recovery like? are you on crutches, if so for how long? and how long is recovery in total? i need to know this so i can plan my surgery, i know i need to have it done soon since the pain is so bad but i’m debating on march when i have some time off (10 days or so) or waiting until my semester is over at the beginning of may (which i’m not sure is possible). please help me, any information would be great! thanks.

my doctor is talking about releasing the muscles that attach to the periosteum of the bone. he said that will help stop the periostitis. any info on that procedure, outcome, recovery (time and pain) would be greatly appreciated. i’m gonna have the surgery in a couple of months once i’ve finished my semester, but i wanna know what i’m gettin myself into. thanks sooo much.

I’ve known of a few people who had fasciotomies and none of them had very good results. I would ask your doctor how likely it is to help. I would also ask him how long after the suregery it will be until you would be able to run. Also maybe try acupuncture…I would be sure that I tried every other option before the surgery. Do some searches online for more information. You will also have decent size scars on your legs from this procedure.

My best guess is that your surgeon would do a fascitomy in which he would release the problamatic compartments. Chronic shin splints are often compartment syndromes in disguise.
