Doug you should consider what is going on. Is the problem shock waves comming through the heel – do your shoes have enough cushion in them. Are your anterior shin muscles weak, are they overdeveloped. do you have abnormal arches in you feet that don’t absorb shock or transmit forces to the lower leg properly. You can try treatments like ultrasound, electric stim, acupuncture.

Hi Doug…shin splints are mostly due to the front muscle in your lower leg working to hard as your heel is hitting the ground as your walking. One of the cause for that muscle to work too hard is if you have a tendancy to be flat footed. Get a good walking shoe that is a “pronator”. Also, you probably don’t want to hear this…you must rest. Give your tissues time to heal. Ice may also help with the pain. If all else fails go see a good PT> Good luck,Mary
