Shin splints

(2 discussions)

I have been going to the local YMCA, I have been having leg pain on the front of my left shin. I have been diagnosed as having possible shin splints. I was wondering what are the possible treatments? I am gaining quite alot of weight from not exercising, I was wondering what type of exercises can I do that will not aggravate the leg?

I had shin splits in both legs about a year ago. The good news is that with rest and consistent treatment, they go away! I took 2 weeks off of running & cycling. Then, I began running again- beginning at 20 minutes and increasing 10% every week. After every run or bike workout, be sure to ICE the leg!!! If you can, ice 2-3 times a day. When the pain is gone, begin strength training that area. Also, make sure you find the underlying cause. The pain will return if you don’t treat the cause. Are you overpronating? Check your training log- did you increase distance or time to quickly? I would stay away from spinning classes- the clips on the bike may be aggravating your condition. YOu may be pulling up without realizing it. Cycling indoors on a regular bike if you are clipped into the pedals should be fine. Swimming should be ok- just don’t push off of the wall very hard. If you have a deep well at your pool you could also do some deep water running. Be conservative with your return and don’t forget to ice!!

Shin splints is not that bad, but u do have to immobolize it for sometime, otherwise it wont get good.
U are lucky u have it only one leg though. I had strees fractures on my both legs and I still have it but it’s about to end though.
    U can still swim.
And bicycling too. they probably have it on YMCA. U have to watch ur food too. However I haven’t had any excercise in last 4 months I have only gained 10 lbs.
U have to balance ur diet too.
they’ll probabaly put u in a cast (the boot)
If it didn’t get better after 6-8 weeks and wasn’t healed after 2 months my suggestion to u my brother is to get a permanent cast, the ones u cant take off.
    Good luck
