Shin splints….again

(2 discussions)

i’ve been experiencing shin pain for the past 10 months or so. my doctor has diagnosed shin splints after ruling out anterior compartment syndrome and a stress fracture. i’ve gone through 2 rounds of physical therapy, the first one making the pain worse and the second one getting me no where. then i changed doctors and the new doctor agrees with the diagnosis but doesn’t know why the pain won’t resolve. i’m in college in pittsburgh and everywhere i go on campus, i have to walk up hill, so when i returned to campus after break, my shins began to throb again, even though i continued walking over break, although on flat surfaces. now this new doctor wants to send me back to physical therapy, and i’m a little reluctant b/c of my past experiences. please let me know if u have any advice. thanks!!

    Hi
What you have found is probably the cause (I love these ‘diagnose at a distance’ forums
The type of shin splints you are descibing sounds like tenoperiostis where the fasical sheath of (probably soleus) becomes inflammed > fibrosed > and eventually calcifed (if left untreated). The best you can do is to stretch soleus , gastrocs as much as possible and, if you overpronate (a common predisposing factor) you find someone to help correct it
You may find a sports massage therapist who can help (this is my suggestion)
    Hope all goes well……..

last night i was doing the ice massages that i was instructed to do and i came across a lump in my leg. it is adjacent to the tibia on the medial side about 4 inches above the ankle. the tibia is sore and the bump is extremely sensitive. it is not a muscle knot or anything that i know of. i don’t know what it could be considering it is as hard as the bone. i’m kinda worried especially since i’m away from home. please give me some advice. thanks.
