Shin splints…in my forearm

I have been a runner for a number of years so I know what shin splints feel like. Now that I have been lifting weights I have developed a pain in my forearm that I can only relate to shin splints. The pain is strongest during and after my bicep workout, in particular preacher curls. Can anyone suggest any treatment for these pains, and/or alternate bicep exercises? Majest

First, stop doing preacher curls. I’ve heard from other qualified people (I’m not a doctor or physical therapist) that the extreme flexion of preacher curls often causes injury. The first order of business is – rest. You might have to rest for several weeks before the pain subsides. Then a program of stretches, perhaps ultrasound and heat treatments, and low-weight curls (non-preacher) to strengthen the muscles.

In the future, stick to barbell or dumbbell curls – or even better, skip curls and do chin-ups instead. Chin-ups are the best exercise for the upper body. They will work your biceps and your back. If you can’t do them with your full bodyweight, start out with one of the assisted chinup machines (i.e., a Gravitron).

    And see a professional.
