Shock-like knee pain

(2 discussions)

I’m a 41 year old female racewalker who just did my first marathon 3 weeks ago. The day after I started to have severe pain in my right knee, on the outside, when I walked. Rest didn’t help; pain was worse after I had been sitting for a while and stood up. Almost no tenderness to the touch. Pain comes and goes, not connected with extent of activity. I can walk 3 miles and it can hurt some, but hours later, it can give me the shock pains again. It can also give the pain out of the blue. No one seems to know what it is. My doc (a gp, not a sports doc)says wait it out, but I’m frustrated. Anyone have any idea? Should I just continue to walk?

I’ve wondered about ITB. I’ve been doing a stretch for it, but haven’t noticed any improvement. But,then again, I haven’t been doing it on a regular basis. I will look into new trainers, I hadn’t thought about that, and I’ve been using the same pair for all the marathon training.

Since I can’t get in to my regular doc for another week, I might see if any of the sports docs around here have any open appts.
I think a PT could help me with exercises, but I need a referral from a doc.

    Thanks for your advice.

    Hey.
I had that once when I started running. Found out it was to do with my trainers. They weren’t supporting the arch in my foot properly and gave me pain on the outside of my knee. The sports therapist I saw said it might be ITB friction syndrome. Have you heard of it? I ended up doing some exercises and getting new trainers. After a couple of weeks of rest the pain had gone. Maybe it’s that?
