Shoulder blade pain, tingling/numb arm and hands

(7 discussions)

Hello, I have had on-going pain and a hard knot under my right shoulder blade for a few months. It started slowly and has increased to daily over the past three weeks, to the point of constant tingling/numb arm and hand.
My arm and hand go completely numb while I am sleeping.
The pain is now starting on my left side, too. I don’t have insurance so can’t afford to get it checked.
I have scheduled a massage, but wonder if it could be more serious.
The pain has switched from left to right side over the past few years.
There’s also a loud “crunchy” sound when I rotate my shoulder.
I used to experience a lot of neck pain and a chiropracter said that I have scar-tissue on my left side, but now my right side is giving me the most trouble.Any advice or help is greatly appreciated – I am in agony!

This sounds similar to symptoms that I have had on and off for about 10 years. Back when it first started, I saw an internist (who, as it turns out, was also a cardiologist) – after lots of expensive tests to make sure my heart and vascular system were ok, I was told, “Well, it’s inflammation” and given a shot, which cleared things up temporarily. Then I went to an orthopedic medicine guy, who put me on muscle relaxants at night and anti-inflammatories all day, which helped a little but didn’t solve the problem, and the drugs caused unpleasant side-effects like memory problems, which was not good for me at work. When I stopped working at a computer all day, the shoulder got better, but it has gotten worse again now, maybe from carrying my kids around so much or from the shift in my center of gravity due to my current pregnancy.
I started going to a chiropractor last week, and she says I have a rib out. It feels a lot better after an adjustment but the problem has returned, esp. after a recent long car trip where I had to turn around to the back seat to help my toddler a lot. Another adjustment today (a pretty intense one this time), and I had immense improvement. She says it will take a little time to get it stabilized but it will get there.
The downside is definitely the cost – each visit isn’t too bad but it adds up quickly with repeat visits. And our insurance doesn’t cover it. It’s worth it for now, but I don’t know how long I can afford to keep up the visits!

I have had similar pain. I have had neck pain and my shoulder would welcome a mack truck to run it over, maybe even a couple of times. I have had symptoms of classic carpal tunnel for years and when my pinky and 2nd to last finger started to go numb I thought it was carpal tunnel, however, I also felt like I had a marble stuck in my elbow.
I did have carpal tunnel surgery and it did help somewhat as to the fingers going to full numb. Finally someone told me about a “myotherapist” . I went…THANK GOD! Seriously it has made my life so much better. I can now turn my head quickly from side to side and I wouldn’t think to let a mack truck hit me now. It took about 7 weekly sessions at $75.00 for 2 hours. I have been very grateful for his help. I used to go to the Chiro too, but to think of it, they can adjust all they want but if your muscles are still pulling in wrong directions you will just undo what they did. You got to get those muscles to calm down. Medical Doctors can give you meds, but they don’t heal and they leave you “stouperous”. I found your post by searching “tingling in shoulder blade”. That is what I have now. that is how my muscles start to go burzurk. If I let it go too long I will have muscle tightness from my shoulder thru my shoulder blade and up my neck. I get a crinkle between my eyes and I get edgy. I just go in for another treatment and it goes away.
I am a Pharmacist and I have a patient that has been on multiple meds for over a year now and they are messing her up because they are narcotics. I gave her enough money for 2 appointments knowing that this is really her only hope and it will allow her to live a “normal” life. She has started the sessions and is now paying on her own, because she knows it really works. I urge you to consult with a “myotherapist”.. Medical Doctors can give you pills or surgery. These don’t “heal” you they only leave you “foggy” or limited in motion. The real breakthrough to “normalization” is a good myotherapist to help you get those muscles under control. -I wish you a quick resolution to your painful problem.

My left shoulder blade when I get up in morning is tingling and slightly numb feeling, but it’s the tingling that is uncomfortable, I also ache in between my shoulder blades, and often the ache seems to go down into my side, I also have tingling pins and needles in hands at night, what could this be, I often have neck ache too, sometimes ache between shoulders catches me when I breath.

Sounds like rotator cuff issues. Crunching is bone on bone. Might need surgery.
