shoulder range of motion problem

I do not know of any event that caused my problem but I have a range of motion problem in my left shoulder.
I can not move my left arm in any direction as far as I can my right and when I inadvertently move it to the resistance point and slightly beyond, the pain is excruciating.
There isn’t any real shooting pain.
It is pretty much all localized in my shoulder.
My question is, are there exercises that I can do to remedy this condition?

I suffer a very similar problem. I am not the athletic type, and can’t remember ever stresing my left shoulder. However as long as I can remember, when I reach straight up, then try to bend the shoulder further back, I seem to hit a stop in the joint. I can force it beyond that, but at the cost of some immediate and lingering pain. The pain only occurs when I move my arm counterclockwise (backwards). The right shoulder joint suffers no such range of motion limitation. This is not a debilitating thing, though I have always wondered if this is something I should have looked at.
