    I RUN HOT AND COLD

    Dear Miriam

I’M 64 and during the day my feet sometimes feel a bit cold, even though they aren’t.

In bed they get terribly hot and the soles and toes have a crinkly sensation.

It’s getting very uncomfortable and annoying. I have heard of something called burning feet syndrome. Can you tell me more about it?

BURNING feet is quite a common foot complaint, usually in people over 50, and there are many different causes. Diabetics are particularly prone.

The feet may be red and swollen. However, often there’s no physical change. You feel a burning sensation on the sole or top of the foot.

    Causes of burning feet are:

DAMPNESS, together with friction, so its important to buy shoes that let perspiration evaporate.
INAPPROPRIATE SOCKS. Natural fibres, like cotton and wool, absorb moisture from your feet but don’t let it evaporate.
ATHLETE’S FOOT can sometimes spread to cause burning sensation on the sole of the foot.
ALLERGIC reaction to shoe material or socks.
    ALCOHOL is also a factor.
    SMOKING.
A TRAPPED NERVE can lead to a hot burning sensation.
GOUT can cause a burning sensation on the side of the foot.
The remedy is to buy shoes and socks that have adequate ventilation. If you are suffering from athlete’s foot then treat this condition.

Reduce alcohol consumption and stop smoking.

I recommend you ask your own doctor to make a diagnosis
