Soleus tear

(2 discussions)

diagnosed with partial tear in soleus. haven’t run in 2 weeks. last time i ran it was a 10 miler and i was crippled afterwards. haven’t done much but swim (trying not to push off from the wall). started PT yesterday – he does very light light stretching, ice and some easy massage. any ideas how to make this heal quicker and how long people were out for with this injury.

thanks.

Took me 8 weeks to get back to running 1 mile at a time (from 8-10 miles); what worked: Initial ice massage, plain old massage, stretching very gently; rest and elevation; then (after about 10 days) walking 10 minutes. Still could not run to cross street and avoid traffic. Step ups onto box, all four directions. Balance on one leg – 30 sec at a time – hold leg out front, then to side, then to back; repeat balancing on good leg; staris; towel stretch; Pull against resistance – using rubber strap – four directions, good leg as well as bad leg; then walk 15-20 minutes every other day; then (after 6-7 weeks) run 1/4 mile/ walk 1/4 mile; repeat to 3 miles total; now working up to run 1/5 miles. Goal 4 miles after four months. Swimming helped keep aeroibc shape but I quickly bored of it. Keep after it! The body is amazing in its capacity to heal; it takes more than rest to heal – you must strengthen as well. Like a sprained ankle…don’t worry, it will get better. You can sabotage yourself by doing too much too fast = don’t push if it makes a sharp pain. Better to rehabilitate yourself in what seems way too slow a period than to re=injure yourself and make a chronic injury.

One benefit of all this: I REALLY appreciate being able to run at all. Darn it that perspective is so costly.

[This is an injury that can plague you off and on for quite a while. I have had this for about 6 months until last week when it finally tore. I am just starting physio this week. I should have sought help earlier and may have avoided the tear, but who knows.e]
