Sore knees

(2 discussions)

I am not too sure what the trouble is but even though an avid multisporter until recently I am having problems returning to my running. I had taken a break over christmas last and upon commencing my preseason took a skiing holiday (during feb) where I tore my medial ligament of my right knee:(. recouperation was adhered to but ever since i tried to start running again both my knees (particularily my kneecaps) get sore the day after and remain that way for quite a while reverting me back to the stationary bike in the gym. I dont think the two are related but any help anyone could offer would be appreciated!

Query, is the pain around the knee cap? Do you find that walking up and down stairs or sitting for a prolonged time worsens the pain? Do you have any swelling within the knee itself? With regard to running are you trying to go to far to fast? If the answers were yes to the first couple of questions you may be experiencing RPPS (retro-patellar pain syndrome) Thought to be because of an imbalance in the major muscle groups of the patella (knee cap) which cause the patella to track wrong within the patellar or femoral groove causing pain and inflammation around the knee cap. In order to prevent this the thought process is strengthening the quadriceps specfically the VMO or vastus medialis the muscle you feel overlying the medial aspect of the knee.

I will be interested to see how you combat this.

I tore ligaments in both knees whilst refereeing a football match over 3 years ago. I still have difficulty at times when doing lots of matches and also when the cold weather is about.
I am not sure if there is any relation with the old injury, but the aching is in the same spots and can be quite severe at times making it impossible to stand.

I have recently started refereeing every weekend again and the pains are starting to come back.
