Soreness on Tibia

(3 discussions)

Since last November, I have had a localised point on my Tibia that is tender to the touch. I have no pain or disomfort or inkling that there is any problem when I run, walk or even hop on the leg – it is just a tenderness. This tender point is about 1/3 of the way up the tibia, on the inside of my left leg, but more towards the back of the bone – I have to push my fingers into my leg and towards the back of the bone to find the most sore point. There is no soreness on the front or anywhere else.

Stress facture springs to mind because of the location and the localisation of the tenderness, but I am in no discomfort at any time of the day – it’s just if I prod the area! I am worried it might be the initial stages of a fracture.

I also don’t believe I am doing enough high impact sport to cause it – I play tennis twice a week on artificial grass and I was running about 6 miles in new cushioning shoes.

Has anyone had this before, or could advise me what it could be?

    Thank you for your reply.

An update: I took about 5 weeks off running. My shin got completely better. Then I started running only about 3 miles a week for 2 weeks – it came back.

I have recently experienced such a pain on my right shin. Like you said, it seems like it is behind/to the side of the bone. From numerous sources, i believed the problem was shin splints and strengthened the shins accordingly by numerous foot raises. Two weeks later and the shin is feeling a lot better.Definitely work on strengthening the dorsiflexors at the front of the shin and this may help to clear up the problem.

You may indeed have a stress fracture. I had a problem much like yours from running track, but our school doesn’t have a track so we have to run on the street. After a few weeks of progressing pain in my left tibia one morning I woke up and I couldn’t even walk on it. So I went to the doctor and got an x-ray which revealed a stress fracture in my tibia.
