Sterotypical Knee Injury

Several years ago I damages my knee playing football and have had two operations to repair torn cartilage. I went through the physio programme but never actually got back into football because of work commitments. Instead, I took up weight training and have been training ever since. I have been aware since that time that my knee is not 100%, but with my training/running I thought it is in OK shape.

Yesterday I had a casual game of football with some guys from work. We played for about 1 hour, at the end of which my knee had a few twinges – one inside and one outside – but was OK . This was the case when I woke up this morning. Now – 8 hours later – my knee has swollen up and is stiff, and consequently I have restricted movement – it feels like I have a weight wrapped around my knee! The whole joint feels a bit delicate and moving the joint I get the odd ‘click’ feeling from within – as if the joint isn’t performing smoothly.

As part of my weight training I specifically train legs (quads, hams) and I go for a run at least once a week, plus I use the treadmill.

Help! Have I done yet more damage?? I thought my knee would be in good enough shape for a casual game!! Any advice would be welcome, otherwise I’ll have to see a doctor/physio. (

A lot of text there – hope someone can advise.

    Hi,

This is an old post, but I hope you get to read this reply!!

Just guessing here, but I was once told by a Physio that your body heals to meet the demands put upon it! I reckon there is alot of truth in that!!

So if since your knee was injured you haven’t put that kind of stress on it, it won’t handle it. You may have been working it, but if you do something different it’s not going to be used to that at all.

You go for an hour at this NEW stress, and bam, it screams at you!! No wonder.

Maybe if you’d only done 15 or 20 mins it might have been fine! Then next time do a little more etc.

    Don’t know if that’s it, but it’s a thought.

Or….. you might have knocked or twisted it, but being warm not noticed it at the time. Ever found a massive bruise after training, but don’t remember being banged? Same thing.

    Anyway, hope it’s ok.

    Sarah.
