Stinging Heel

My husband has been suffering for a few years from a stabbing, stinging sensation in his left heel.
He says it is similar to a bee sting sensation.
It is not constant, but stabs every few seconds and he cannot sleep at night. Then is will disappear for a few weeks, but always comes back.
Corizone shots help but only for a couple of weeks.
Doctors seem to be stumped as to the cause of this.
Any ideas?

WHile this might indicate a nerve problem, the difficulty lies in finding the nerve. It can even be referred pain from the back L5 or S1.
