Stress fracture? CS? Shin splints?

(2 discussions)

Hi- I ran cross-country 6 months ago and haven’t been able to run since because of shin pain in my lower right leg. I have been to many doctors and had tons of tests and my current doctor has it narrowed down to either a stress fracture, compartment syndrome, or shin splints. The last two require surgery. I am concerned about having surgery/being in a cast- how long till i can resume normal activites? will I be ready for cross country in 4 months? Any advice, suggestions, ANYTHING would be wonderful- thanks I am really frustrated!

I would have your doctor attempt to r/o each possibility. At this point a stress fracture should be visiable on a bone scan. I would also suggest if a compartment syndrome is a possibility is getting compartmental pressure reading. I would also suggest once anything major is r/o in order to correct any mechanical problems you may have.

Hi, it seems as though you may need to find yourself a new doctor! Stress fractures are basically a result of shin splints. And Ive never heard of any kind of surgery that can fix either one. If right now you are only experiencing mild to medium pain, your best bet, is to relax your running. The continuous stress of pounding while runnning is only making your situation worse. I understand that you want to keep in shape, and you can, but right now , you’re going to have to take a chil pill, and you should be out of season right now, correct? You should ask your coach about some cross training possibilities, like bike riding or treading in the pool. The bike, in my opinion is best, because your cardio is getting about the same workout, but when you start running again, your body will feel kind of heavy, but that should go away within the first week. But for now, hard surfaces are NOT your friend. Good luck!
