Subtalar Coalition

(2 discussions)

I am 39 yrs old. I am about 5’11, 245 lbs. I was diagnosed with Subtalar Coalition in my early teens. Since then, I have received more conservative treatments, but did not have the desired affects. Outside reasons kept me from seeking more aggressive treatments over the past twenty-plus years. I am wondering what type of aggressive treatment could be available to someone my age, what type of rehab would be involved and what may be the prognosis for a full recovery. I was told at the time of my last x-ray (about 3 yrs ago) that my coalition is very severe. It has dramatically reduced the range of motion in both of my feet. What has been your experience with severe cases. This condition has limited me in many activities I used to enjoy. I have even missed out on a lot of things in life because of my condition. This condition causes me an unbelieveable amount of pain. I suffer with pain on a daily basis. Some days are much worse than others depending on what I am involved in. If I neglected this condition and chose to live with it, how bad can this condition get? Would it completely inhibit my ability to walk in my senior years? I was contemplating seeking some disability from the government. This condition has also affected my decisions as to where to seek employment, based on what type of activities I would have to perform. I apologize for the lengthy message. This is my first time posting a message in a forum. I really appreciate any information you can give me. Thank you in advance.

My 11 yr. old son was just diagnosed with a calcaneonavicular bar coalition in both feet. We are anxious about the thought of surgery but being that he is an avid athlete, we are strongly considering the surgery route. He is just beginning to have pain in his feet and hope that this relieves it for him before it gets worse.

hi I’m a 19 year old in the military and the dr found out that I have a subtalar facet coalition also arhtrithis all in my right ankle and I have a choice to get surgery or not. I don’t know if I should get it or not. I have already used shoe inserts basics and custom made, an injection also some pills. but the catch is that I get severe pain only when I work 8-12 hours straight, the other times I’m normal besides a limp. should I get the surgery or wait till it gets worse and then get surgery and keep that pain level for the rest of my life. and if I do get it know will it be worth not doing sports. I have to let the dr know my choice by september 8 2014.thanks
