Swelling

Is swelling always present when ankles/wrists are sprained? One of my friends told me that he had been to a doctor with a sore ankle but was dismissed because there was no swelling at all. Is it possible that there is a genuine injury to a joint without there actually being swelling? And does this apply to muscle strains as well e.g. quad strains?
Thanks for any help
Colin

not all injuries produce swelling (bruise)
you could have a intramuscular haematoba (no bruise) and this could be very painful.
if u have any queries the best person to se is a sports pherapist (go to your local football/soccer club)
