Swollen Toe Mystery?

I noticed that my toe was swollen about 3 weeks ago.
I pressed on it, and it didn’t hurt at the time.
I went to the Dr. last week and she didn’t know what was wrong (even after taking x-rays, since the bone looked fine), so she prescribed antibiotics and an anti fungal cream.
However, after using this for a week, my toe is still swollen, and now it hurts.
I do not think it is an ingrown (it would probably have hurt from the beginning), and one side of my toe is bulbous while the other side of the toe is normal size.
She said if it didn’t get better she would have to refer me to someone else, but I’m just seeing this become a big financial fiasco.
Any suggestions?
Thanks a million!

Without seeing your foot and the X-rays, I can only guess. There are other things that can cause this problem, such as rheumatoid arthritis. The soft tissue swelling would precede any bony changes. Your doctor is correct in that if the normal expectations are not confirmed, then a referral may be indicated.
