tailbone pain

(3 discussions)

Hello.
I injured my tailbone during the delivery of my baby.
My OB suggested that I bruised my tailbone.
I suffered with terrible pain for 3 weeks, then I decided to see a chiropractor.
He took xrays and discovered that my tailbone was actually dislocated and my sacrum was also crooked which caused one leg appear to be longer than the other. He then popped my tailbone back into place and adjusted my sacrum and was confident that my pain would go away within a couple of days.
Pain still there a week later, and went back in for the second adjustment. Again, confident that pain should subside.
Well, here I am still in pain.
I called him and he said my muscles and nerved need time to heal and the pain should subside.
I feel no difference in the source of the pain or the intensity of the pain.
Is my Chiropractor giving me the right treatment?
Why would my tailbone still hurt so bad.
I have a hard time sitting without pain and getting up from a seated position without pain.
Walking and laying down is not a problem.
I am desperate for answers and treatment.
It is very difficult to care for 2 young children with this pain.
Please help!

I would suggest going to see a regular doctor and have them do and MRI to find out what is really going on in there. I had what I thought was tailbone pain and it turned out to be from a herniated disc in my back. The nerve was pinched and it caused pain to travel down the nerve to the tailbone area. If it is that there are different treatments depending on how bad it is. If the chiropractor is not helping I would say not to go there anymore. If it was going to work a few adjustments should have been enough. You can also just wait and see if it gets any better. Nerves when damaged can take months to heal. If it does not get any better in a couple weeks make sure you get to a regular doctor or a spine specialist. If it gets worse get there ASAP.

Hi Michelle, I can definitely sympathize. I banged my tailbone in early March and experienced pain whenever I sat down. After an extremely painful airplane trip I finally dragged myself to the doctor in April. He diagnosed my tailbone as dislocated. He performed a manual and painful procedure to put it back in position which involved sticking some fingers up my sensored and grabbing the tailbone and wiggling it. It was not fun and it didn’t work. I took hydrocodone (vicadin) to endure my next two cross-country airplane trips. Finally in June I went back to my doctor. This time he did an xray first to see which direction it was dislocated. He performed the same horrible manual procedure as before but because he knew which direction it was dislocated he thought we had a better chance at it working. Well, it did work, for about 5 days, until my 3 year old son jumped on me while I was sitting on the ground. The force of him jumping on me slammed my sensored into the ground which re-dislocated my tailbone again and the pain is even worse now than before. I discovered your posting because I’m looking for other answers or treatments. Unfortunately, once you dislocate the tailbone, or any bone, it is very easy for it to become dislocated again. Go see your general physician and see if he can manipulate it back into place – its not fun – it hurts a lot for the few seconds it takes – but it might work. Good luck and I’ll let you know if I find any other options!!
