Thumb pain

I have pain in my left thumb at the base of the nail. I have had this pain off and on for years but it does seem to be getting worse. I have a white line up the thumbnail and the nail always splits as it grows. This pain has also been radiating up my arm and into the shoulder and back area at times. Sometimes heat helps, sometimes NSAIDS and sometimes nothing helps. The pain is worse when the thumbnail is touched. I would really like to get rid of this pain for good, it’s very annoying. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Dear lady,
I have almost the same problem with my right thumb nail at the base, (at 5 p.m. if it was an analog clock). I also have it for years and I am not sure but I think I dropped something heavy on it . Months or even a year or two after, I noticed extreme pain when that particular area was hit or even with a handshake with a lady with long nails. The pain I feel when it is accidentally knocked, cannot be described. I scream like an animal being slaughtered. Esthetically the 2 thumb nails are identical and look very healthy. Some octors say the nail must be removed, others that the “matrix” under the nail has overgrown, not even suggesting a solution . I am also very eager to get rid of this problem. Good luck and keep in touch. Andreas
