Tib-Fib Fracture

I have a 13 yr. old nephew who had a spiral fracture if the tibia and fibula from a football injury in Sept. He was released to play basketball 2 weeks ago, but of course is nowhere near his former self. I was wanting to know what can be done to regain the muscle tone and mobility he has lost due to inactivity. He can run but has no speed or jump. Would swimming help? Also, what should be done before and after practice and games? We have been doing hot and cold treatments(4min. hottub, 1 min. ice water) His “good” ankle is now sore, I suspect from favoring the broken leg so much. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i got a fractured tib &fib, due to 2 gun shots. a closed fracture, surgeon was able to fit the the bones back into place. the fib could be heal on it’s own, but the tib had to be held in place with a steel plate and couple screw. the fracture to the tib was close to the ankle, and the fib was midway. it’s been ’bout six and half weeks since the incident and i’m off the casts and on the crutches. I have full knee motion range, but only half for the ankle. I still have swelling at the ankle. if I can get some ankle exercise advice, i’ll appreciate it. I really miss walking. thnks
