tibia plateau fracture PT

(5 discussions)

My wife broke her left tibia plateau and fibula 4 weeks ago. She had plates/screws put in 9 days ago and is in rehab hospital now. Our insurance is kicking her out and will only pay for 30 PT visits per yr. The Dr said NWB for 12 weeks. My questions are: 1) how does she best utilize the 30 PT visits? I’m guess some(6-8) 2-3 weeks prior to weight-bearing status change, with most being after the 12 weeks. 2)is there a PT regimen/exercises that she can be doing until the weight bearing status change? I have been unable to find anything via Google. 3) she is having great difficulty moving her foot upwards. Any exercise or heat/ice treatments that can help stretch the achilles tendon? The Dr suspected some Achilles tendon damage but ultrasound did not show any injury. 4) what should her ROM be by the time her weight bearing status changes? 5) she is able to move 30-35 deg now 7 days after surgery (with assistance). Is this normal? and how quickly should this increase?

I highly recommend you see a PT now. Get in a few visits and start a daily home exercise program. Maybe you could go like every 2 weeks and let the PT see how her progress is coming along. That should spread out those 30 visits nicely.

I had surgery 6 months ago on my left tibia platue. I still haven’t gotten all my motion back in my knee. I am in rehab. But it still seem to be the same. I am having trouble bending my knee. I can walk on it but not to long. I have been using crutches since I had my surgery. The only thing I can tell you is that it’s a sow process that takes time.

I just had a motorcycle accident and surgery (6 screws and a plate) as well. The first few days were agony – I couldn’t move it after the second day – don’t even try. But about a week afterwards I was at 55 degrees, two days later at 70 degrees, and a week after that 90 degrees. Tomorrow will be three weeks since surgery and although it does hurt to really push it, I am at about 105 degrees. It feels like your knee is going to explode from the pressure! But it doesn’t, and it does get easier every day. I find the best is to sit on something hi off the ground and swing my leg back and forth. You do want to work on it in about a week though. My PT said that whatever ROM you have after three months is what you are stuck with. Either that, our they will have to sedate you and force it.
