Tingling in fingers- Carpal tunnel? Pinched Nerve?

(2 discussions)

I’m a keen Judoka. One of our warmups involves a LOT of push ups. Lately Have had tingling in two fingers on left hand and one on right hand. Very specific points on my fingers. Like somebody has drawn a line with a biro: That thin. A bit of pain in my forearms SOMETIMES. No pain in fingers, just a weird tingle when I am resting.
Don’t know if its a wrist or elbow injury or whether I’ve pinched something in my upper back, neck or one shoulder which is referring. It’s not holding me back at all. No pain. No loss of strength, but it does concern me.
Any ideas brethren? I think it could be from the tonnes of push ups. But if somebody has some suggestions and a likely course of treatment, I would be most grateful.

Sounds like it could be median nerve compression during the push-ups. I would suggest doing them with your hands on dumbbells (bigger ones so that your fingers have room to be wrapped underneath) so that your wrist is in neutral during the motion and see if that helps. They also sell specific “grips” for push-ups that work just like leaning on dumbbells keeping your wrist in neutral.

Carpal tunnel symptoms are very specific: the involved fingers are thumb, forefinger, middle finger, and HALF of ring finger, due to nerve distribution. If numbness involves 2 lateral fingers, the problem is usually in the elbow. But the numbness continues to the point of pain and may occur after the activity is stopped. My carpal tunnel releases solved my problem. However, the first surgeon did not cut enough; problem recurred very quickly. Second surgeon cut the band? ligament? across the wrist and I’ve not noticed loss of strength as a result.
