toe broken?

My wife may have broken her toe yesterday. The one next to the big toe. A 2 litre water bottle fell on it, lid first. There is swelling on one side of the toe. We are not sure if its actual swelling or in fact a bone fracture?
I asked her to go to the doctor but she insists there is nothing they can do for her. She asked me to go to the pharmacy and get some cotton balls and medical tape.
If we tape the injured toe together with the next toe and place cotton wool inbetween, would this be ok to keep the toe steady? Does she really need to go to the doctor now? Or can we wait for 2 weeks to see how it heals?
Thanks

Your wife should have her foot x-rayed. Splinting is a good idea, however, the area on the side of the toe very well could be a bone fragment that could cause problems later on. With an x-ray, you can make sure that the phalanges (the bones that make up the toe) are in good position and will heal correctly.
