toe nail removal hesitation…

Greetings.
I am thinking of having my toenail removed. I have fungal infection in big right toe. I also injured it about 4 years ago and is now so ingrown I may loose the nail completly. Is there any other way than loosing the nail alltogether? Do they ever grow back effectively to protect the top of my toe? Thank You for having this forum. Best regards, joseph.

Generally, if the toe nail is simply removed and allowed to regrow, it will grow back amd look the same (ingrown and fungused). It may take up to a year to fully regrow. If the nail is reoved and the root is destroyed, then there is no nail (no fungus either). As far as the toe needing protection, the skin usually hardens enough. I will admit I have come across the occasional patient who regrets having this done. Usually it is because of the way it looks though. Other options for treatment include using antifungal medication. There are oral (Lamisil, Sporanox, Diflucan) and topical (Penlac) prescriptions. While I have seen anecdotal reports of things like bleach, vineagar, corn meal, Vicks Vaporub, etc. as treatments, I honestly believe if they worked the drug companies would have figured out a way to market it (at a much higher cost). You should discuss your concerns with your doctor.Hope this helps.
