Toenail coming off

I damaged my toe last winter walking in inappropriate boots.
Now the toenail has totally separated from the toe on one side and across the base.
The other side is still securely attached.
Should I have it removed to avoid the risk of tearing it off?
What is involved?
How long is recovery?

If the nail can be clipped back and/or filed down that would probably be best. Eventually the new nail should push he old nail off. If you need further assistance, please see a podiatrist.
