Toenail Removal pain

Hello. I wanted to find out how long the surgical sight would hurt after toenail removal. My mother had her big toenail removed about 5 or 6 weeks ago and she is confused as to how she should continue to treat it. It drains when she wears socks and when she leaves it uncovered it crusts up and looks really nasty. The doctor she saw said not to soak it and not to put antibiotic on it after the first week. However, it is still aching and throbbing, draining and crusting up. What should she do about this or is this perfectly normal? It still hurts her to wear shoes over the toe.

Doctors vary with how they treat many things. I can only tell you what we do and by no means is that the ONLY way to do it. After a nail surgery, we have patients use a salt water mixture poured over the bandage 3-4 times daily. The wetter the better. AFter we allow them to dress it daily with a topical antibiotic such as Neosporin (but this too can vary depending on various factors) We advise patients to keep the healing wound covered and protected until it is well, and that too can vary from several weeks to months depending on the individual. You mother should return to the doctor who did her surgery and have it looked at.
