Toenail Removal pain

Hello. I wanted to find out how long the surgical sight would hurt after toenail removal. My mother had her big toenail removed about 5 or 6 weeks ago and she is confused as to how she should continue to treat it. It drains when she wears socks and when she leaves it uncovered it crusts up and looks really nasty. The doctor she saw said not to soak it and not to put antibiotic on it after the first week. However, it is still aching and throbbing, draining and crusting up. What should she do about this or is this perfectly normal? It still hurts her to wear shoes over the toe.
