Toenail removed

(3 discussions)

About 5 weeks ago, I had my toenail removed. It is staying swollen & red & not healing up right. The one on the other foot was removed in 2010 by the same doctor & it healed up real good. He gave me the usual low-dose antibiotics, cream & soaking directions. The toe hurts terribly sometimes & at times feels like I’m being touched with a branding iron. When I went back for another weekly follow-up this past Tuesday, he put me on Cipro as the toe did not look any better.Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Hopefully you have discussed your options with your doctor. My answers will be very general, not specific to you. Generally speaking screw removal can be performed with local anesthesia. There was a time that the majority of podiatric surgery was performed in the office based surgical suite under local anesthesia. Times have changed with insurance and government unfortunately dictating much of how we do things. It is quite likely this can be adequately done under local anesthesia, barring any specific medical problems you might have.
