torn ligament under the knee cap

My son is 13 and has a torn ligament under the knee cap.
This is the 2nd injury to this knee in 2 years.
The first injury we did not get a MRI so never knew what was really wrong.
He was put in a full leg brace and crutches for 2 months.
This time he was put in a knee brace and crutches.
We had a MRI 2 weeks ago and were told he has a partially torn ligament below the knee cap. Our family doctor wants to cast his leg for total immobilization.
I am afraid that since this is his second injury at a young age that his knee needs to be corrected surgically.
What is your advise?

I disagree with your doctor. I currently have all four of my major ligaments in my knee torn completly. I dislocated my knee and was taken to a hospital where a doctor drilled six holes into my bones (thru the skin) and attached a metal device. This was used for total immobiliztion. That was a huge mistake! The longer you wait to have surgery the harder it is to find a doctor to fix it (in my case anyway). Ligaments do not heal themselves. After one month of being “totally immobilizted” Nothing changed for the better. Instead I developed blood clots and was hospitalized for a week. I have been in a full leg brace with steel bars on each side ever since October and I have to use either a cane or walker to help me(I am only 19). I have been to every medical center I can find, including DUKE and UVA with no luck, they all tell me, if I would not have waited this long I would be an excellent canidiate for surgery. I suggest you keep him in the brace, it has held the knee so far, it will continue to do so until you get a referral to an othropedist. A cast would be money wasted and would serve no real purpose. Trust me I am speaking from experience. Good Luck
