torn rotator cuff

My husband was diagnosed with a small tear in his left shoulder cuff in 1996. He underwent physical therapy and was fine.
He recently fell playing football with our sons and hurt it again.
He now has a full thickness tear and his dr. has recommended surgery with no option of PT until after the surgery.
He also has impingement and arthritis in his shoulder as well. Is just PT an option with a full thickness tear with impingment?

A full thickness tear means the entire tendon tore from the bone. PT will not help a full thickness tear and tendons will not heal. Surgery is the only option. The surgeon will probably correct the impingement at that time as well. PT usually starts a couple weeks after the surgery…each surgeon is different. PT is usually 6-8 weeks. If your husband is healthy and can undergo surgery without complications then a repair is the way to go. Mya
