torn tricep bench pressing

(2 discussions)

While performing a bench press with only 225 lbs. on the press motion I felt a rip and then my elbow popped . I dumped the weights to prevent any further damage but it did hurt like hell, and I immeditely iced it as much as possible for three days and will now start heat therapy . My question is, how long should I wait before attempting to do any low weight tricep contactions of any kind? I’ve been lifting for 20 yeats and this is my first tear and I want to get it right. Thanks for any advice

I would get it checked out right away. I am also very big in weight training and I ruptured my tricep tendon. Just above my elbow was very mushy like jello. I could not push my wife away with my forarm. This is pretty serious when it comes to recovery.

Scott, Thanks for the input, as that sounds very similar to what happened. Being self employed, I have no way to seek a professional solution (my insurance sensored) I can tell you that the area just above my elbow now feels solid, although I still can’t staighten my arm completely unless hanging from a bar, and my tricep is just now regaining its former shape. I also had a bout with the inside of my elbow being stiff/sore after pull ups, or heavy curls. I just cut back workouts and all of that has disappeared. I feel better now than I have since it happened, but I’m a little gunshy on the bench. I’m going to take that real slow, though. From everything I’ve heard they won’t do much for a guy who is 49 years old. I am going to stick with it, and I am going to beat this. Again, thanks for writing, as no PT seemed interested.
