Trouble swallowing?

(3 discussions)

I tend to feel like my throat muscles are very tight or as if they freeze when I try to swallow. I really noticed it last night when I would bend my head forward as if the throat muscles were contracting or cramping. It was weird, because it felt like my throat in general was tighten and I felt pressure like when you raise in altitude.Maybe tight muscles? Anyone experience this? Last night they seemed to be better when I stretched out my neck a bit. I assume this is muscular and not neurological. Of course, my mind starts thinking about stroke. Could any of the swallowing or tight neck muscle be attributed to neck adjustments? Maybe I should be sure to stretch the neck muscles after the chiropractor visit.Weird thing is, I have had odd swallowing issues for months now…where it feels like something is getting hung up or stuck in my throat.

I have never witnessed or heard of anyone having tense neck muscles or difficult swallowing related to chiropractic treatment. Do you have heart burn or have at it for years? Difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia)can be caused by many esophageal issues.

Thanks doc, I get worried because I hear all the hype around neck adjustments and problems with health, stroke, etc. I know a lot of it is hype though! I know on Chirobase there is a big scare about such things although I try to not get caught up in that!Anyway….back in September it started to feel like sfood was getting vaught in my through….as if stuck in a flap or something. Then..after I started having scary symptoms ion October, with pain in my feet, numbness, tremors, nausea, weight loss, floaters in the eye, and a little trouble swallowing… I started seeing a chiropractor and then noticed the noises in my neck. I thought maybe the noises in my neck and the increase in difficulty swallowing could have been related to the adjustments. Maybe not. Anyway, I haven’t seen any doctors specifically for the swallowing so I am not sure who that would be! It can be scary when the muscle that control swallowing are not cooperating, like they are frozen. Neurological? Physical? Anxiety? Not sure……but I do have some reflux with certain foods I eat. Should I see a specialist? Thanks!!!!!!!!

You could possibly have tight SCM muscles…the large ropey on that goes from your ear to the inside part of your collarbone. Tight neck muscles have alot to do with swallowing, as I have had the problem myself. IF you do not have any neck problems or issues, range of motion exercises for your neck may help.
