undiagnosed hip pain

(3 discussions)

I am a distance runner on the regional NAVY/Marine Corps team, who has been sidelined for two months with bad hip pain. After the last marathon I ran two months ago, I noticed an odd hip pain. I took two weeks off and then tried a 5 mile run. After about two miles, I began to have pain on the top of my outer hip joint.
I managed to finish the run, but could barely walk afterwards. My coach took me to the hospital, where x-rays turned out negative and they said I probably just had a strain. That was two months and many trips to the doctor and therapy since. The pain has moved more towards the inner crease area of my right hip. I am unable to stand or walk with out a limp, and sitting is even more painful than walking. The only comfortable position is laying on my side with pillows propped around my hip. The pain wakes me up several times I week. Being active duty Marine Corps, I can’t afford to be ‘broke’, and am having difficulty with finding military doctors who will do anything more than give me pain killers. Does anyone have any advice? Running is my life!

I am having the same problem! I am a martial arts and exercise instructor, and I seem to have “pulled” a ligiment or something in my hip during a seated strength training class that I was teaching. The pain seemed to go away with rest but came back whenever I hiked or taught too many classes. Now it’s almost constant, and wakes me up at night. I tried massage, acupuncture, heat, cold, Chinese “hit” medicine used by martial artists in training. I have a book by Jim and Phil Wharton on stretching that I’m going to try, but any input would be appreciated.

Same thing here, only I don’t currently do regular exercise other than chasing a 1 & 2 year old around the house, yard, etac. I in fact am trying to join a gym, but wonder about this hip pain. I am fine in the morning, but by evening I just want to sit. When I lay down in bed I get waves of pain in my hip & thigh. It actually reminds me of when I was 8 mo pregnant, but I was 30lbs heavier. My first course of action is going to be to lose 5-10 lbs to see what that does. I am only 5’1″ and 5-10lbs makes a difference. I used to do a lot of aerobics before having kids, but never had anything other that shin splints one time.Would be curious as to what has caused this.

In my internet search for those afflicted with hip pain from running, I ran across your paragraph posted on the 4th of July. I too have similar hip pain that has progressed over time. I was wondering if you have found any help for your trauma and if you would be willing to share any information with me? Thank you ,Sheri
