Undiagnosed Knee Injury

(2 discussions)

I have been injured now for 5 months, and it’s undiagnosed.

I was out running, and 2 hours after I got back I felt pain in the back of the knee. I was initially diagnosed for hamstring strain which turned out to be incorrect when I visited a decent physio.

My decent physio diagnosed possible cartilage damage and after a short wait I got an MRI scan and referral to a knee specialist. The MRI results came back totally clear with no abnormalities.

It’s 5 months on now and my symptoms are still there. The pain is in the back left of my knee, and is brought on my a deep squat and general bending. My physio is convinced of cartilage damage, but the MRI was totally clear.

Please help..!

Thanks for that, very helpful. My OS did say he would do diagnostic keyhole surgery if I didn’t respond to physio.

I have been back to my decent physio in the last 3 weeks and he was found inflammation in one of the tendons in the back of my knee. I’ve had some quite rigorous massage and accupuncture. It’s been a positive response and my symptoms have improved considerably. My physio is excellent, and if it doesn’t heal he will send me back to the OS.

I’m going to carry on with this for a while as the results have been positive so far.

It may be time to discuss the possibility of a diagnostic arthroscopy with your OS. MRIs are not 100% accurate, I don’t have the stats in front of me, but they miss 7% of mensical tears. If you are still symptomatic something else should be done, maybe even a second MRI with dye injected. This technique really outlines the mensicus and makes it easier to detect tears.
