Unexplained foot pain and swelling

(2 discussions)

For the past three weeks I have experienced pain across the top of my foot. I have not injured it in any way. The swelling is very obvious, however there is no visible bruising or any indication of injury except the pain and swelling. It has graduated from being annoying..to just dang painful (extreme pain and swelling at times) and it affects my ability to walk, causing pain in other areas. I cannot bend my foot (toes specifically) toward my body or away. At first the pain was only present when I walked. Now it hurts all the time.
Is this just a case of some muscle pain, and should I just grin and bear it until it goes away?Or could this be a sign of something more serious?
I very much dislike visiting the doctor…especially if they simply are going to say that it is just muscle pain and say “Take two of these and never call me again!”

This can possibly be due to a stress fracture, soft tissue mass, or something else. I am not trying to scare you into seeing a doctor, but without an examination one will never know.

Thank you for your reply. I guess I will have to break down and visit the doctor. I usually do not visit unless I have a serious illness/problem or need antibiotics. But since there is no explanation for my pain and swelling and it has persisted for 3 weeks, I believe it is in my best interest.
