Weightlifting injury

(2 discussions)

Hi,
I have an injury in my left arm. I got it doing incline bench, i didnt warm and i decided to do some 3 rep sets [ which ive never done before [ so i was literally asking for injury ]. Anyway i lay down, and then lifted the bar from the bar holder, and i felt a pain in my upper tricep/shoulder region [ its hard to pin point the pain ]. It just aches now, when i weightlift it aches and sometimes when i just sit there it aches. Anyway i have stopped lifting for a while. Anyway, i just wanted to know does anyone have any idea what this injury is from what ive described, and also, should i put ice on it each night or something?

Also, should i be eating to just maintain my weight when im injured rather than bulking up? i was going to eat a large amount of protein, as i will still be doing some running i think.

Thanks for any help, it is greatly appreciated

Adam

Not 100% sure but i know shoulder problems are common in weightlifting – In the shoulder joint there are four deep muscles that work to stabalise the joint (roatator cuff muscles). It may be you have overused these through training which is causing pain as they are not working effectively. You need to alternate exercise to allow enough time to rest these muscles. So you can’t do shoulders one day and chest or back the next as these muscles will always be involved in any of these exercises. Could also be that you usually do a certain tyoe fo training and have tried something different and used a muscle you don’t normally, which may have caused a tear or strain.
Anothe possibility is you may have over time aggrevated the tendons in the shoulder.. Maybe speak to a fitness trainer at the gym as they should know about this and should be able to help you with a program to avoid aggrevating the area while still being able to train.
You should also try a sports massage therapist as they will know from what training you have been doing, exactly what the problem is and be able to help you with rehabilitation as well as easing the pain
