What's Happened to my ankle

On Sunday night just past (4 days ago) I was playing football (5 a sides) when I went over on my ankle. There was nobody near enough to kick me or anything like that although I may have been knocked off balance slightly by someone trying to get closer to me. However my ankle instantly started hurting and I knew I had given it a sprain. Stupidly I persuaded myself that I could “run it off” and after a short spell in goals returned to the pitch where my “running” was limited at best.
After the game though my ankle started to really swell badly and I was surprised at how firm the swelling was initially. I used the RICE technique all night after this and on Monday too when walking was almost completely out of the question. By Tuesday night I noticed that I had really deep bruising all over my ankle and lower leg. There is a long horizontal line of purple bruising on the outside of my foot under the ankle bone, purple bruising around the bone itself, more purple bruising up the back of my calf and today I have noticed that the inside of my ankle is still swollen but also starting to bruise as is my instep and smaller toes.

I have sprained my ankle before (8 years ago) and thought this would be the same but it clearly is not. The level of bruising is worrying me and the swelling is still evident (although not as bad as it had been) even though the pain when I am walking has decreased quite dramatically over the last 2 days.

I have been really injury prone for the past four years (ruptured ACL in left knee, with torn meniscus, post comeback had a hamstring strain in right leg followed by sprain of right knee…and now this) and so I am really keen to get back playing asap. Anyone have any ideas exactly what I’ve done and what I should do now in order to get back playing as quickly as possible?

The only thing I can think of is to buy a wobble board to get my proprioceptors firing again but any other advice would be gratefully received.
