What to do after ingrown toenail surgery

I had ingrown toenail surgery that left me with half a toenail.
This nail is flaking and starting to come off (it is attached on one side).
Once the nail falls off, can I polish the skin?
I wasn’t sure it would be safe to use nail polish on exposed skin.
