upper left leg numbness

(74 discussions)

When I stand in one spot for more than a couple of minutes, the upper part of my left leg (thigh) goes numb. Can you tell me what would cause this? As long as I walk or keep moving, it doesn’t bother me though.

Wow I have the same thing, the upper left leg, the outside of it. Some times it goes down to my calf of my leg, if don’t get up and move around a little. It’s getting more frequent too. I hope someone can tell us something. What kind of Dr. would I go see for that?

I have the same symptoms. The upper part of my left leg around the hip area goes numb all the time especially if i’ve been standing a while. It almost feels like a pinched nerve.

Hi Chris,What was the outcome? Are you feeling better and do the doctors know what is causing the numbness / pain? My husband has got (what sounds like) idential problem. He has had a MRI (clear), ultrsound (clear), x-ray on his spine which was also clear… Please tell me that there is a cure!

I have a similar situation. It used to happen frequently was I was younger, mostly when I was lying down. It went away for a few years but has come back again. Today is the first day I have it while sitting or walking around. Glad to know I’m not alone.

I just read thru each of the entries to date and find Eric’s comments the best. I had issue with this a number of years ago and it just came back daily now for the last 3 months. Meralgia Paresthetica(which is my GP’s discription for my conditions as well) is a specific type of numbness and a lot of these posts sound a little more generic in nature. The issues about weight, Diabetes and MS are noted as issue in this problem. The basic issue here sounds like “Lateral Femoral cutaneous nerve dysfuction” which to me a non-medical computer geek is like a pinched nerve in the groin as in carpal tunnel syndrome is a pinched nerve in the hand. The real solution I have been given is to change positions and it shouldand normally does clear up the issue. If it continues after one changing positions then it should be check. I saw a Neurologist this morning ( he has had it for years as well) and for me it is the pinching of this surface nerve from being over weight and clothes pinching the nerve.

I’ve had this problem for years. My neurologist failed to diagnose it, but after much research I learned it is a condition called Meralgia Paresthetica. There are many websites which describe this condition. In the past year I’ve lost about 15 pounds and it has made a big difference, reducing the pain I’d get after long periods of standing. Even the numbness seems to have subsided a little.

So glad to have come across this site. I first got upper left leg numbness when pregnant. It went away after the pregnancy but has since returned periodically. I believe in my case Meralgia Paresthetica sounds most likely. This numbness has returned again and I feel sure it is as I need to lose some weight. I have noticed in the past that it goes when I shift a stone or two.

I have the same condition … have suffered with it since 1990 … now is worsening and starting to feel numbness in right leg down to foot … predominat in lower front calf, ankle, and top of foot. A Physical therapist suggested this back exercise … ( Don’t do it if it is painfull )…Stand with your back against a door or wall …Place your hands in front of your chest, as if praying … hold head up, looking forward …do a squat, keeping yourself braced against the door As you push back up toward a standing position, lean forward and down, as if bowing … stretch, then slowly lift your torso back up and repeat …No more than 10 reps to start with … This will increase lower back strength …Have done this exercise for 3 weeks now … Numbness still occurs at the same frequency as before (i.e.,) after 10 minutes or so of walking or standing, however, when I do this stretch, the numbness goes away almost immediately … it comes back again, though, after standing or walking 10 minutes or so … I don’t know if this will improve my condition, eventually, or is just a tool for temporary relief … let me know if this helps anyone

I have this terrible pain in my left side which is making my left leg numb. I can not sit down a lot of times because it hurts so much. Once I get moving through the day it is not that bad. But I have really hard time getting up in the morning and after sitting for a long time I am not able to stand up before stretching while experiencing a terrible pain.

I started getting this awhile ago, but it went away, it is back again I decided to search the internet, I am quite surprised at the number of people who have the same symptoms. I believe it has to do with the amount of weight on the upper body….not sure how much everyone else weighs, but I need to drop a few pounds. Diabitis is in my family history, I am wondering if that has anything to do with it……..let me know if anyone has seen a doctor yet and what they have said…….thanks.– Derek

Hi everyone, I too, am getting frustrated. This is whats been happening to me for the past 2 or 3 months (it only happens when I lay down with my legs straight out, but it happens frequently) my outer left thigh, tingling, pins and needles like sensation, starting at the top left side of the knee and extending down about 10-12 inches. First tingling, then, seemingly at will or by thought (this is the weird part) it becomes HOT…very hot, but it is INTERNAL, the surface of my skin does not heat up. Whats strange is that I only notice the intense heat when I remember to think about it, before that it is just tingling. After the heat, yes, there is numbness. It usually goes away when I stand up and walk around, but it always comes back when I lay down. I am in pretty good health, healthy weight and diet (vegetarian) and I am only 25 years old.
Does anyone know what is happening? Strangely, my husband gets the same thing with the exact same symptoms and we have no idea what is causing it.

I have been having the same symptoms. I am going to a chiropractor and its helping slowly but my leg does hurt alot now. It started out extremely mild but once I came home for Christmas break, it was alot worse to the point that I couldn’t relax or lay down for a long time. Noone has told me what it was or what is causing it, but getting my back adjusted at the chiropractor is helping slowly but not enough to make it go away completely.
I don’t know what is causing my pain, but if you find out anything about it please email me.

Have you heard of anything about your problem? I have this for years. I think it has a lot to do with my weight. I’ve noticed that when I go barefooted, it’s worse. Thought I may have a pinched nerve, but it’s not my whole leg, just the upper thigh and it’s only on one leg.

    Avatar

    9 10

I have experienced much of the same. I just turned 27 years old and I feel too young to be having this kind of pain after standing for a while. What happens is I stand or walk around for a 20 minutes to half an hour, my leg or legs get numb in the thigh, then if I don’t sit down they start to burn. Sometimes it’s too late and they start burning before I can sit down, but usually sitting makes it go away. My wife thinks it’s a pinched nerve in my back. This only started after I put on some weight in the last year or so. It’s really weird and I’ve just hit that point where I’m not ready for a doctor’s visit, so I am researching.

I have this exact same problem and have no idea what’s causing it.The only thing I can think of is that it seems to be worst when sitting on my couch, which is very very soft and cushiony. The numbness/tingling/’hot’ sensation is so bad that it wakes me up during the night.I have always slept on my right side and I think that if i lay on my back or on my left side that it makes it better. However I’m not sure.I’m really not sure what makes it better and what makes it worse because I can’t tell if a sudden increase/decrease in tingling is a good thing or a bad thing :(I’d always assumed that the tingling meant that circulation was returning to the area and therefore a good thing. Another thing, it seems like an inflammatory thing, but i take large amounts of ibuprofen for migraines and it doesn’t seem to help so I don’t know 🙁

I have read all your replies. No one however has stated if they feel tingling sensations of hot shooting pain through the outside thigh area of their leg (at the onset of the symptoms – as the numbness comes on). Once that hot burning sensation goes away, typically within a few minutes, then numbness takes over. This only occurs in my left leg and when I am walking or standing for any period of time. I have been left for several months now with some numbness (all the time) just above the left side of my knee – working up about 8 inches into the outside of my left thigh.
Has anyone experienced this along with their numbness.Has anyone gotten any answers?

oh my god it’s finally nice to see that someone else knows what i’m talking about when i say that my leg goes numb but get’s really hot first and shoots pain up my thigh…. When I was pregnant 3 years ago my left thigh would go numb just from standing too long walking not sitting though soon as I had my bundle of joy that stopped so i just thought it was the weight of the baby… I just recently as a week ago had a breast reduction surgery and noticed my leg going numb the day i left the hospital, the other night about three days ago i was out with my mother shopping and i couldn’t walk right couldn’t stand up right or lift my foot either right or left more than a few inches off the ground, the next day with some heat and ice the pain went away but i still have the numbness, in fact it just woke me out of a sound sleep all pins and needles, i don’t think that it is my weight anymore…

Contacted Dr. no answer as usual checked with my orthopedic Dr. could not give me a firm answer now who do I go to. Back surgery was for the L4&L5area of spine. I have the same numbness in upper left leg and so does my father. He has had it for 10 years with no diagnosis. I just started to experience the numbness and it has been getting bigger. Im only 22 and 5’5″, 110lbs so weight isnt the problem. We have always had back problems and problems with our sciatic nerve. I think it is kinda like a pinched nerve, but my father said physical therapy did not help. He also said drinking alcohol made it worse by dialating the blood vessels, I guess. Doctors have given no answers. Stretching out the muscles in your back and top of leg might give some relief.

My leg is improving due to the chiropractic. I continue to have hot/cold sensations and there is still a bit of numbness but I do believe my condition is improving. I am on the Atkins diet and am doing pilates to improve my weight and flexibility. I am not overweight (145 lbs.) but I think these actions couldn’t hurt.

I’ve been experiencing this numbness for several years now and it’s getting worse. Only on the Left side- crotch, inner and outer upper thigh, lower back and left pelvic area goes numb when sitting. New as of this year when I walk on incline or certain elliptical incline levels and yoga postures the numbness travels into the left leg and bottom of foot. No pain, but completely annoying. MRI’s Normal – “small disc bulge with NO stenosis”, EMG Normal. Doctors/neurologists are clueless and basically just telling me I’ll have to live with it with no explanation. I’m a psychotherapist so I sit for hours at a time and I don’t like how it’s progressing over the years. I’m 35 5’7″ and 117 lbs. so weight is not the issue. I have mild 20 degree scoliosis but the doctors said that has nothing to do with it. Chiropractor’s adjustments feel nice but doesn’t change it, just helps align my hips again. I’m seeing a new pcp that specializes in integrative/functional/holistic medicine and I’m hoping she’ll have some better referrals. Very frustrating as it’s a daily occurance for over 5 years now. I despise driving or riding in cars the most.

My mother thought that perhaps using my laptop computer on my lap was effecting the nerves in my right thigh – hmmm, maybe. I’m no longer using my laptop as a “laptop”. I continue to have numb skin and when walking I get hot and cold sensations. I’ve tried the chiropractor but will now make an appointment with a doctor to check it out. Its very scary to not know what is causing this numbness!

I have had this problem for several years now, and have just begun to research it – I suspected it was a nerve issue, and listening to these other responses pretty well confirms this for me. Look at the following link and decide if this matches your sysmptoms – obesity, pregnancy or tight clothes (for you younger folk!) seem to cause this. Look below

This is exactly the symptoms I’m experiencing. Thank you for finding this, I feel much better now. It always seems to come on me when I’m cooking something that requires an extended period of standing. At least now I feel like it’s a benign issue, but I will still mention it to my doctor, just in case.

My husband has this also. Its his left leg. They did all the nerve testing…ncs, eng etc. Came up nothing. Now the is going back to his regular Dr. for a follow-up. Personally, I think he has nerve damage from doing some heavy work outside. But will keep you all posted after his Dr. appoint.

    Avatar

    9 10

Update:….Well my husband went for his follow up. The Dr. could find nothing wrong. The Dr. basically said it could probably go away on its own. The Dr. himself had numbness at one time, almost his whole leg. It went away.If something is pressing on the leg, tight clothes, etc…that could cause it. Now my husband thinks its the chair he sits on at work, because of whre his leg rests on it. Thats it…!

I have leg numbness in my upper left leg. It is from standing too long. Just like others here, it doesn’t happen when walking but does when standing or when walking slowly around a store. I think it is nerve related. I have a a disc in my back that is losing its elasticity. I think the leg issue is a nerve issue related to this disc bulging and hardening.

Just started this weekend after some heavier than normal work around the house. First noticed when I took ~ 1/2 hour out to talk to a neighbor and thought it was due to standing still. 2 days now and it doesn’t go away.A friend said he had the same problem and had it corrected by the chiropracter, he also claimed that laying on the floor flat on back would alleviate. No luck so far.

I am a 41 year old male that has left thigh numbness. 13 years ago I had a L4,L5-S1 fusion, Although sense the fusion I’ve had no real problems.About 3 weeks ago, I fell off of a 8 Ft. ladder onto a floor transformer;onto my lowback, sensored area, sense then my left thigh has been numb. I have done some research, and found out there is a nerve lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh also known as (Lateral femoral cutaneous) is a cutaneous nerve that innnervates the skin on the lateral part of the thigh. I have not yet had an MRI yet,I’ll post the results when done. Feel free to do some research on this nerve, I think it’s what my problem is.

I’m a 26 year-old male. I’ve had an office job for 5 years and just started a manual labor job that requires lots of bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting heavy objects repeatedly. I’ve noticed the past 2 weeks that the top of my left thigh has gone numb, about the size of my fist. I can’t pinpoint what has caused the problem, but here is a list of potential causes
    2. I experienced fatigue in my legs when I first started the job, especially an old injury in my left hamstring that causes tightness. I started concentrating on stretching my hamstring AND quads every morning before work, perhaps overstretching my left side, causing muscle or nerve damage.
    3. I had to climb onto a structure at work to fetch a few items, and on the climb down, I hopped down about 2-3 feet to the ground. I noticed some back discomfort during the day, but perhaps it pinched a nerve to my leg.
    4. Sometimes at my old job, I would shoot videos at events which required standing for hours. I would notice discomfort in my left hip due to the way I lean when working a camera. Perhaps this helped lead to the problem I am having now.
    5. I used to have chafing/itching sensations on both my thighs when I took a shower which promoted the urge to scratch, on rare instances the scratches would break the skin and bleed. Perhaps I damaged the nerves in my left thigh this way. I doubt this is the cause though. I’m really thinking it’s a nerve problem that is originating from my lower back due to the new stress I’ve exposed my body to with the new job. I’ll experience a back pain at work from time to time, but the back pain is usually gone by the next day. My left thigh numbness is the only consistent symptom that I have that may indicate a potential serious back problem. My leg is not in pain, it’s more of an ever so slight burning sensation, like a last-stage recovering burn, mostly just numbness. I notice the most discomfort when I flex my legs by standing on my toes and arch my back slightly.

Hi everyone out there. I too have been looking for answers about my left thigh for many years. I have numbness in my upper left thigh for about 10 years and I also have tingling and numbness with a sensitivity to temperture. When my thigh itch I’m afraid to scratch because it appears that I may pull the skin off. It’s sensitive to touch and after standing or walking for long periods of time, my leg begins to feel like thousands of needles is sticking me with a burning sensation that begins just above the knee on the outside of my thigh. It also becomes worst in extreme temperatures hot or cold. When I complain to my doctor, I don’t get any response. I believe too that it is a neurological condition that they (doctors) don’t have answers for yet. I’ll continue to look for a name and treatment I could live with. Right now, I’m just tired of this condition! Comments?

I have just recently been having a numb almost fallen asleep feeling in my left upper leg/thigh also sometimes the feeling moves down to my knee. I wondered if maybe it was a side effect of a medication I take. The only thing that I have recently been taking is my birth control. I looked up my pill on line and leg and arm numbness is a severe side effect. I still have yet to talk to my docter but if this is the cause then maybe your numbness is also a side effect of some kind of medication you are taking. I hope this was a help to someone.

Well it has been two years since I posted a message about my numb thigh and I still do not have a cure.My early symptoms were hot/cold sensations, itching & pain in a large area on the front of my thigh above the knee – all symptoms of a nerve being pinched somewhere. It feels numb more towards the outside than inside of the thigh. I have tried chiro., orthotics, discontinuing use of a laptop, pilates and losing weight. I still believe chiropractic will cure it. I also think strengthening the abdomen and back with stretching can help.If someone has one of those machines that tips you over and stretches you, please post if that helps at all.

I was normal until I decided to play a game of football. After the game, I had sever hip and back pains. The pain eventually subsided after which when I stand-up on one spot or walk for more than 10 minutes, I start feeling pain on my left leg, accompanying by numbness. The pain and numbness become more severe should I continue walking or standind. As soon as I sit down, this pain and numbness go away rather fast. Usually the pain is completely gone within a spell of about 5 minutes. I went and saw a sports doctor and he prescribed for me some medication. I have finished the medication, not to mention that I had to pay him rather handsomely for consultation, but my proble has not gone away. Please tell me what could have gone wrong as I am now getting worried.
    Thank you

After suffering for years with leg numbness (see my earlier posts), I have found a solution that has worked for me The alignment in my body was terrible and was manifested through numbness in my leg, foot pain, and I even suffered from a bit of carpal syndrome in my hands. NO MORE! Anyone can do these moves and restore your body. I hope you’ll try it because it sure has helped me to trust that when my body hurts it is a SIGNAL and I CAN fix it.

When I lay on my right side, the right side of my leg gets numb from my hip down. What causes that?

mine was numb then all of a sudden something in my lower back popped! and its a lot better. I think it was a pinched nerve, the mussel in my leg was sore for 2 weeks after but its getting better now, the nembness is going away, working its way down to my foot!

I too have upper thigh numbness. My left thigh area has been numb for 8 years now. A Constant numb, sometimes it feels like someone is pouring ice cold water down my leg, sometimes it feels like something crawling on me, and at other times it feels like it’s burning, I mean on FIRE. Then I started having severe burning pains in my lower back that shot down my left buttock area and threw the numbness in my thigh, almost unbearable pain. I had an MRI done and there was no nerve being pinched, but there was lower disc bulges in L3-L4, L4-L5 and mild protrusion in L5-S1. I have been going to physical therapy for 3 weeks, 3 times a week, so far there has been no improvement. The doctor’s and physical therapist have no clues yet as to whats acytually causing the numbness. Will keep ya posted when I find something out…….
