Soleus tear

(6 discussions)

anyone out there ever tear their soleus muscle. partial tear of mine during running 6+ week ago. no running since. PT twice a week. still feeling quite a bit of pain.

can anyone tell me the recovery rate of this kind of muscle tear. driving me nuts because i have seen not much improvement. PT said could be 8-12 weeks. have been swimming – wondering if that is detrimental.
thanks.

Try cross frictions – generally accpeted as a painfull deep massage to the injured sight. If you can feel a lump or knot where the tear is, this should work well. You need to “rub” that knot out. I fixed a bad tear in two weeks and was running long runs without pain. Prior to that I couldn’t hobble through a mile without intense cramping pain.

yes i saw a sports guy to dx. it. my PT is also a sports pt. i really don’t think i do that much walking and standing during the day. i sit at a computer for my job. i do not walk excessively. maybe i am being impatient. 7th week now is starting. i will give it some more time.
thanks for your reply. my PT said it could be 12 weeks.

Healing takes time. Depending on how bad the damage was, it could take awhile. But, if you feel like you are not progressing as quickly as you believe you should, then perhaps get a second opinion from a different therapist. Have you been to a sports med doctor? Do you do a lot of standing or walking during the day? Be careful with the stretching. Sometimes it is the worst thing to do when a muscle is healing.

sorry, forgot. is there anything else i should be doing. i am goigg to PT but we are doing VERY light stretching, ultrasound, he does massage, then ice. very modest stuff. i am basically just doing the PT and swimming. i also LIGHTLY stretch on my own.

any suggestions for anything else to speed up the recovery time. thanks

i swim with a pull buoy and i only push off with the good leg. it doesn’t touch the wall and i don’t kick.

honestly 3 months??? so 6 weeks and no improvement is not that unusual?

Probably will take about 3 months to get it fully healed. That’s a big thing to tear. It may be really tight after that and more prone to future injury, so EASE back into anything you do. Swimming should be ok as long as you are doing a lot of sets with the pull buoy and not pushing off the wall really hard. But, if it doesn’t feel ok then you are probably prolonging the recovery process. Hope that helps!
