Wrist Fracture

I have just had an external fixator removed for a severe comminuted wrist fracture. Unfortunately, I cannot get to a physical therapist until Halloween. I am wondering if there are basic exercises/stretches I can be doing in the interim to aid my recovery. I am hesitant to do anything for fear of reinjuring the wrist. It is very stiff and range of motion is minimal.

Mike,Why don’t you call your doctor and ask if you can begin using warm water soaks (15-20 minutes at a time/ 3-4 times daily), while doing simple range-of-motion exercises in the warm water. Then, when finished each exercise, dry off the wrist and elevate it above your heart for 5 minutes. I think you should be able to ask your doctor this question over the phone, thus saving a return visit. Maybe Mya will have some specifics to add, but I can’t see anyting wrong with doing very simple range-of-motion exercises, as long as you check with your doctor first. This should remove any swelling and began to get your motion back, which is necessary to do before starting on wrist strengthning exercises. Please keep us updated on what your doctor says, as well as your progress. Good luck!
