Toe Nail Infection and Trauma

(2 discussions)

About a month ago, I somehow hurt my toe playing softball> Underneath the nail and the whole big toe became very painful and it started leaking a yellowish red fluid. My doctor prescribed an antibiotic and the pain went away. However, after the liquid under the toe drained, I had a gap between the nail and the toe. I thought it would fall off but it never did and it felt completely normal again. Then three days ago, the nail was snagged. It started bleeding and the nail is now yellow, black and red, plus it’s very painful. What is going on with this nail????

You reinjured it. The nail is attached to the nail bed with very small fibers. It isn’t that hard to tear them. When that happens, bleeding occurs. The yellow clear fluid or serum is after the blood settles down in the injured area. You need to see a podiatrist for more answers, since I can’t see your toe. Good luck.

Dr. Abrams:three weeks ago I must have stubbed my big toe in floor hockey. It was reddish under the nail with no pain. I am on my feet constantly walking with my job and I have comfortable shoes. This week I feel pressure under the nail which has turned white and at the end of the day my toe is throbbing. I thought it was infected and went to emergency but the doctor said it wasn’t. He said the nail was lifting. I am thinking that based on his comments that the nail is pulling along the sides of my toe to cause the sensitivity??What should I do??
