fracture of the base of the 5th proximal phalanx

(4 discussions)

my son 10 yr old son took off his shoe and stomped his foot as hard as he could on the ice 2 days ago just to see what might happen. (stupid thing to do). he has since been limping and whining in pain and at times actually in tears. the pain is in his heel more toward the inside of the foot. I took him to his pcp and they ordered and x-ray only to tell me that his pinky toe is fractured. now I was told to tape it to the toe next to it.
I pulled the toes out to tape them and he had no pain.
I am baffled as is he. he is insisting that his toe is fine. the pain is in the back of the foot on the other side. as a matter of fact, for the last 2 days, he has been walking ON his toes to avoid putting weight anywhere near the heel. any thoughts on why the dx is so different from what he is feeling. he is seeing ortho on Tues.

thank you, we have gotten him some crutches. I did get the x-rays from the hospital to take and you can see a small crack at the base of his little toe. But- his his toe has no pain what so ever and his heel is killing him, now his heel is warm to the touch as well. when he was a baby the whites of his eyes were blue and his doc said could be a bone disorder but we would need to wait and see. this is his third fracture, should I look into any kind of testing, he was also diagnosed with hypermobile or loose joints due to chronic leg pain. any other info would be very helpful, thank you for your time.

What you are describing sounds like one of the symptoms of Osteogenesis imperfecta. You can do a Google search for more information about it. I can not tell you if he has it though. I think a pediatric internal medicine specialist may be the way to start. The heel being warm certainly be due to an injury, but there are other possibilities. Again, I suggest he is evaluated very soon.

They may have mistaken the growth plate for a fracture. I always x-ray both feet in a child with open growth plates to compare.Until you see the orthopedist, you might have him use crutches.
