Injured ankle

About 4 months ago i injured my ankle playing football. I went to volley the ball with my right foot and made a bad connection, as a result my foot went outwards away from my body (not too sure of the correct term! external rotation?). The pain wasn’t too bad at first, it was bearable and i was able to continue playing. It felt slightly sore for a couple of hours after playing but then the pain soon went and was unnoticable until i kicked a ball again. The origin of the pain was on the inside of the right foot; on the bone of the ankle, just above the bone of the ankle, below the bone of the ankle (ligaments)and slightly towards the anterior of the ankle. It is painful when these movements occur; plantarflexion, inversion, eversion, external rotation (i think it is?). I carried on playing through the pain for a couple of months and i believe it was getting worse, so i rested for a couple of months. After these two months i was able to run pain-free and do various strengthening exercises using those movements listed above, again, pain free. I then played football and as soon as a kicked a ball the aching and soreness started all over again, and is now lasting longer than before. I was wondering if my ligaments had healed incorrectly after the initial injury and whether or not i have a bruised bone. If so what would be the best course of treatment for this nagging injury? what would you recommend? would an ankle support be beneficial? Sorry about the rather long letter but i felt that as much background info would be beneficial for a more accurate reply. Any sort of diagnosis would be most appreciated as i am itching to get back into action, thankyou.

    Hey
Sorry to hear about your ankle, I know how hard not playing can be. Relatively speaking, the same thing happened to me. It turned out to be a bone bruise (which can apparently take quite some time to heal). You should definitely look into the bone bruise option, as well as osteochondritis dessicans (sp?), as several of the symptoms are much like your own. From personal experience, an ankle support hasn’t helped very much, but plenty of ice and rest help to relieve some of the pain. Good luck!
