Osgood-Schlatters disease

(5 discussions)

My daughter is not a sports person but is active in marching band along with color guard. several months ago she started experiencing severe pain in her legs(shins) that now seems to be centered totally in the lower portion of her knees and our Dr thinks it could be OSD, we have just had xrays done and she has an appointment with an orthopedist this month.
There are some symptoms though that I haven’t seen any place I’ve looked at OSD symptoms which are the pain is much worse when the weather is cold and/or her legs get cold?
She has been taking way too much ibuprofen in the last month or so to suit me with the possible stomach problems it can present.
If we apply ice to the area it makes the pain alot worse but heat makes them feel better.
She also says that when she moves her knees, she it makes a grinding sound that you can feel if you put your hand over her knee cap.
Is this typical of OSD or is there something else it could be that we are missing?

Hi my name is maj and also have osd. You should try getting her to where knee braces and using icy hot or bengay. When I play sports it really helps make my knees better. She should also stretch efore she goes to sleep and when she wakes up. Since she’s 16, she should stop growing at that age or so and then that’s when osd disapears.

I have had Osgood-Schlatters disease since I have been 11 (I am now 18) I find that cold weather causes a lot of pain so always try to keep the knees covered in colder times. Ice has only ever helped when the joint is very swollen – I myself find heatpacks are of much more use to take away the pain. I took Ibuprofen for many years sometimes 3 a day at a strong dose. I stopped due to stomach problems – also if you can’t feel the pain you make the problem worse as your body is telling you to stop. Pshio is the BEST way to make it better, the muscles need to be stretched as soon as this is done and MAINTAINED the problem should be much better.

I have had OSD since I was 10 I am now 18. I was told that exercise would help and I would grow out of it, exercise caused a lot of damage and I now have OSD and real problems with my back and muscles due to leaving the problem too long and exercising it whislt it was swollen. Ice is only useful for reducing the swelling I have found that heat packs work wonders. I have a bad stomach problems due to taking too many pain killers – I don’t think they are a very good idea anyway as pain is your body telling you to slow down! The best thing is to go to a pshio they will give you insoles for your shoes and exercises for the muscles – as soon as the muscles stretch the pain abd swelling will reduce. It really has changed my life. You must be very dedicated to do the stretches esle it will not work! Please email me if you would like any more help!

P.S I also suffer from grinding of the knee and the knee locking as far as I am aware it is just part of having osd.
